If you're looking for a backpack that you plan on taking out into the woods — either to hunt, camp, or enjoy some other recreational activity — then you really need to make sure that backpack is weatherproof. You don't want to have to worry about whether your things will survive and stay dry if you get caught in some rain, wind, or snow. There are many backpacks that are labeled "weatherproof," but since a good backpack is a pretty big investment, you don't just want to assume this is the case. You should instead look closely at the backpack and make sure it has the following qualities and features that will allow it to stand up to harsh weather.

Waterproof Fabric

Pay close attention when assessing this one. Water-resistant and waterproof are not the same thing. A water-resistant backpack may keep your things dry through a light sprinkle, but in a heavier storm, you need true, waterproof fabric. Don't settle for anything less!

Covered Zippers

One place water tends to infiltrate backpacks is through the zippers. So make sure the backpack you buy has a flap of material that goes over the zipper. This will keep almost all of the water out unless the wind gets really fierce, and even then, you'll probably only have a tiny bit come in — not enough to really damage your things.

A Rain Fly

You've probably seen tents with rain flies — separate sheets of material that fit over the tent to divert the rain. The best weather-proof backpacks have these as well. The rain fly buttons or snaps over the backpack and diverts a lot of the rain. This way, you can then fold the wet rain fly back and not worry about water going into your backpack when you unzip it to take something out.

Thick Lining

When people think of weather resistance, they often think of resistance to moisture. But you need your backpack to be resistant to cold, too, so that your things do not freeze. Your body heat will provide some warmth when you're wearing the backpack, but you should still look for a pack with thick lining that will act as insulation, too.

If you find a backpack with the features and qualities above, you can count on it doing a good job of keeping your items safe, no matter what weather you might encounter on your adventure. For more information, contact a company that provides weather-proof hunting backpacks.
